  • Q I've never lifted weights before, what is the best way to start?
  • A Working out with weights is important for both sexes to maintain strength and muscle mass and reduce the risk of osteoporosis and postural problems. With resistance training, technique is key so that you both achieve the gains within your programme and also avoid injury. Hence, seeking professional advice before you begin so that you learn correct technique from the outset is very valuable. Begin with light weights that you can handle easily, only progressing to heavier weights when your fitness levels permit and your technique is correct. Free weights (dumbbells and barbells) will give you the greatest all-round gains as opposed to using fixed weight machines, so try and use free weights wherever possible.
