  • Q When I'm at the gym, should I train with fixed weight machines or free weights?
  • A Most modern gymnasiums have a range of static, fixed weight machines together with a selection of dumbbells and barbells (free weights). Both types of equipment are useful and will help progress your fitness but free weights will provide you with the greatest all-round fitness gains. With fixed machines, you are usually only able to move the weights in a single plane of movement, whereas when you lift a dumbbell, as well as lifting the weight, you also need to balance and control it, which recruits smaller stabilising muscles as well as the primary ones being exercised. So focus on lifting free weights as much as possible.
