  • A Football matches last for 90 minutes and therefore require plenty of stamina to be able to keep running for that length of time. A midfield player can typically run 10 kilometres during a single match so your stamina training needs to be specific to the duration of activity and the distance covered. To improve your stamina, start a weekly long run, adding no more than five to ten minutes each time until you can run for 90 minutes continuously. Also complete a shorter run each week of half the distance of your long run but completed at a much brisker pace, to help develop your speed endurance.
