  • Q What should my resting heart rate be?
  • A Your resting heart rate (RHR) is the number of times that your heart contracts every 60 seconds when you are at rest, to pump blood around your body. Although there is no ‘ideal' figure, the average value is 72 beats per minute. Factors that can influence your RHR include: body temperature, stress, caffeine, certain drugs, smoking and cardiovascular (CV) fitness. Regular CV exercise can lower your heart rate, indicating that your heart is stronger and able to pump more blood around your body with a single contraction. To check your RHR, take repeated readings at the same time over several days when you are at rest to establish a baseline value and check periodically to monitor your fitness.
