  • Q I've had a break from training, how should I plan my return?
  • A If you've had a break from exercise, perhaps due to work commitments or a holiday, it is important that you return gradually so that you don't get over-fatigued or injured. You can often imagine that despite your training downtime, you are much fitter than you are but fitness is lost rapidly so err on the side of caution when you start your return. Initially, keep your sessions light, reducing both the volume and intensity in the early days and weeks, also allowing plenty of time for recovery. As your fitness improves, gradually step up towards your previous levels but as a rule of thumb, it will take you twice as long as you've missed before you're back where you left off, so allow yourself plenty of time.
