Ask a question

Got any questions about running or general fitness? Pick a topic from the list or alternatively search for a keyword.

  • Q Whereabouts should I line up at the start?
  • A Choosing the correct position in the starting line-up is key, because if you get it wrong you can either get sucked into a pace that is too fast, or alternatively have to overtake many other runners who are not going as quickly as you are. At large races, the organisers often place placards by the side of the road which correspond to appropriate finishing times, so that everyone lines up in the correct order. However, if that facility isn't available, the best solution is to enter the starting area and simply ask a few runners what their expected finishing times are. You can then position yourself alongside runners of a similar pace.
