  • Q How much time should I allow between eating and working out?
  • A Fuelling your exercise sessions is extremely important, because if you don't eat adequately beforehand you'll basically run out of energy. However, if you eat too close to your workout, you can feel unwell and your performance will suffer. As a general rule, the more intense your workout is, the longer you need to leave between eating and exercising - so look to allow at least one and a half hours between eating and exercising, and longer than this (typically up to three hours) if your workout is going to be more intense. Everyone is different, and gastric emptying occurs at different rates in different individuals - plus the type of meal that you eat will affect how quickly it is processed - so experiment with what suits you to find your optimum personal timescales.
