  • Q I recently suffered excruciating cramp in my calf on a recent training run and didn't know what to do. Is there anything that I can do if it happens again?
  • A Cramp is an exceedingly painful involuntary muscle contraction, with the exact cause still a subject of debate. Contributory factors can include excessive activity, fatigue, and dehydration (and hence loss of electrolytes through the reduction of body salts such as potassium). The solution is to immediately stretch the affected muscle - the easiest way being to stand with the ball of the foot on a step and drop the heel down below the level of the step until the cramp eases.
