  • Q What is 'processed' food and how can I reduce my intake?
  • A Processed foods are everywhere, from chocolate bars to microwave meals, and are classified as 'processed' if they are produced en masse in a factory, as opposed to being a natural whole-food which is available in its unadulterated state (such as a raw vegetable). Any food products that are 'ready-made' - such as frozen meals, tinned foods and packet foods - will have been made in a factory, and so they frequently contain additives, salt, and higher levels of fat and sugar than is considered ideal for good health. To get a healthier diet, look to exchange processed food options for healthier alternatives involving more natural ingredients and home cooking. A useful rule of thumb to help you cut down is to adopt the maxim: 'If it comes in a packet, leave it on the supermarket shelf.' Do this and you'll be well on the way to reducing your processed food intake.
