  • Q I'm trying to reduce the salt in my diet. What tips can you suggest?
  • A Salt is a proven contributor to high blood pressure, so you are wise to look at ways of reducing it in your diet. Salt is present in a great many foods - primarily as a cheap flavour enhancer. You should look to eliminate it from cooking and also avoid adding it at the table, and instead try using more herbs and spices to add flavour to your meals. Also, search out low-salt alternatives at the supermarket and start looking at food labels for each product's salt content. Foods such as ready-made soups, biscuits and cakes frequently have high levels of salt - so if you start reducing your intake of these products you'll be well on the way to reducing your overall salt intake.
