  • Q I enjoy running both on- and off-road during the same run. What are the most suitable shoes for doing this?
  • A Off-road running is increasing in popularity, but it's unusual to be able to enjoy an off-road route that doesn't include any road sections. If you know your route will have both on- and off-road sections, you need to consider wearing a hybrid-type shoe. A pure road shoe is unlikely to provide you with sufficient traction on muddy surfaces, while a heavy-duty off-road shoe will be uncomfortable and have insufficient cushioning when you move onto the harder road. The best solution is to buy a trail shoe that is specifically designed to have enough cushioning for some road use, together with an outsole that grips off-road as well.
