  • Q I have had my running style assessed and have been told that I need anti-pronation shoes. What does that mean?
  • A Pronation is a natural component of the gait cycle and occurs after the heel strike, when the foot rolls inwards before toe-off into the next stride. It only becomes a problem if the movement is excessive, with the foot collapsing too far each time it hits the ground. This action, if repeated many, many times, can lead to injury - usually to the calf muscles. However, wearing anti-pronation shoes that are composed of a harder material on the medial sides of the shoes' mid-soles (the insides) will help to prevent the problem. A running gait analysis carried out by a professional is the best way to understand if your running style is putting you at risk of injury. This service is now available at many specialised running shops. The value of a comprehensive assessment is vital in order for the footwear or orthotics to be custom-fitted to the foot - thus limiting the factors that may lead to an injury.
