  • Q I have recently had a lay-off from training due to illness. How soon will I be able to return to my previous levels?
  • A This really depends on the nature of the illness you have suffered. As a rule of thumb, fitness is lost at twice the rate it is gained - so you need to allow approximately double your period of inactivity before you are back to your previous fitness levels. For example, if you have missed a month's training, then allow two months to return to where you left off. Break down your training into a base-building phase of steady-state training, where you gradually reacquaint your body with exercise rather than train intensely, and then carefully re-introduce the training intensity you carried out before your illness. However, if you have suffered from a bout of illness then you must seek medical advice from your doctor or health professional in order to determine if you are well enough to resume training.
