  • Q I’m worried about people swimming over me in a race. What can I do?
  • A It’s very common for novice swimmers to panic at a crowded start, for example when people swim over them in the first few hundred metres or at the first turn. The best course of action is to take the outside line at the start where there are less athletes so you are more likely to have clear water to swim in. Also take a slightly wider line around the first buoy to avoid the mass of bodies scrummaging for position. Also avoid getting too close with other swimmers and accidentally locking arms as this can get very exhausting. Just try to swim as close to the person in front without actually touching them. This way you’ll both get around the course faster.
