  • Q What cycle gear do I need as a bare minimum?
  • A Gear you need will depend on your type of challenge, plus when and where it is taking place. While you can can generally start riding in any sports gear you like, the longer the distance you ride the more the flaws in your gear will be exposed. Decent cycle shorts/bibshorts with a quality seat pad will improve your comfort on long rides. Cycle specific clothing, including jersey, jacket/cape/gillet, gloves, socks, leggings, arm and leg warmers, cycle shoes and overshoes will all go some way to making you more comfortable and less inclined to cancel training when the weather takes a turn for the worse or when a long descent chills you to the bone. Most would advise that a decent helmet is a must, while glasses of some description are also useful for keeping insects and debris (plus the sun) out of your eyes.
