  • Q I've heard that elite runners train twice a day. Would twice-daily training improve my performances?
  • A Elite runners will frequently train twice and sometimes three times a day, which is one of the reasons why they are able to produce world-class performances. However, it's important to recognise that they can factor in extra rest and are fortunate enough not to have a 'day job' to fit in around their training. Certainly, more frequent training can help you to improve - but most people have to juggle their running around work and family commitments and so just a single session each day can be hard to fit in, let alone double sessions. For most people, training for a maximum of between five and six sessions per week with a complete rest day is likely to be the maximum time that they can commit to - and you can go a long way on a running programme based around those levels of training. If you can include extra sessions, make sure that you strike the correct balance of quality and recovery so that you don't over-train and risk injury.
