  • Q I'm returning from injury. How soon can I resume my previous training levels?
  • A The important factor to remember when you're coming back from injury is that the injured area needs to be stronger than it was pre-injury before you resume full training - or else you risk re-injury and further downtime. Injuries take varying times to heal and everyone recovers at a different rate, but as a rule of thumb, as you build your training back up, try to initially take a few steps back and concentrate on steady-state training at a comfortable pace. Gradually increase your training volume over successive weeks to your previous levels, allowing extra recovery time between sessions - because you are likely to have lost fitness - until you match your pre-injury volumes. Only then should you look to introduce more quality work such as speed-work and speed endurance training. Also, make sure that you continue with the appropriate conditioning and flexibility exercises that formed part of your injury rehabilitation.
